Around 1760, the creation of the first jigsaw puzzle took place by John Spilsbury, a London engraver and mapmaker. One day Mr. Spilsbury mounted one of his maps on a piece of hardwood and proceeded to use a fine blade saw to cut around the borders of the countries. This creativity produced the jigsaw puzzle that became an educational pastime, as well as an aid in teaching geography to students. It wasn’t until around 1820 that jigsaw puzzles developed into a recreational pastime from being an educational tool.
